Ford, Rolf R. 1974 Journal 15 July Markwood Meadow, 6 mi. east of Shaver Lake, Fresno Co., Calif. ~ 6000 ft. Habitat as described 17 June. I started watching the nest tree northwest of the westernmost bldg. at 0600 and finished at 0730 in order to determine how many juveniles were still using the tree. Intermittent observations were made later in the day. I also counted the cones on a big sugar pine 50 m. north of the easternmost bldg. There were about 11 small cones which presumably would not be mature this season, 150 large cones, and 10 old cones which had already released their seeds. My impression is that the sugar pine cone crop is very heavy this year. I also saw two sugar pine cones which had been cut recently and partially taken apart at the base. The seeds were quite soft. CBK also found a recently chewed cone of Western White Pine (P. monticola) at about 7900 ft. on Mt. Patterson. These are the first cones I've seen cut this year. - Wind was 0-5 mph, temp. was around 50 F in the morning, rising to mid- 70s at midday. No cloud cover.
