Koford, Rolf R. 1974 Journal 27 June Tahoe National Forest, Nevada and Placer Co., Calif. I looked for chickarees from 0700 to 0900 at Steephollow Cr., then spent a couple hours looking at the north side of Bear Valley, 1 1/2 miles northwest of Emigrant Gap. This area was hilly and had lots of undergrowth. I then went on to Big Bend, 8 miles due east of Emigrant Gap, on Hwy 80. I walked for a couple hours in the hills to the south of the town. This area was mostly lodgepole pines, with a few scattered firs and yellow pines. Later I drove around in the valley north of Kingsvale, 3 miles west of Soda Springs. This area was also mostly lodgepoles, and was fairly flat. I saw a couple squirrels there. It is all private property, though. I drove on to Hwy 89, going south from Truckee, and looked at a couple areas close to the road. Yellow pines were dominant and the area was all pretty steep. I continued south and spent the night in the Taylor Cr. parking area, 1 mile north of Fallen Leaf Lake. This area was flat and the undergrowth and debris were light. Mostly a mixture of yellow pines and firs. - The sky was clear all day, wind light. Temp. reached about 70°F.
