9 Oct farther up the road. I set 40 new large folding Sherman in a grid 100m x 250m, traps being about 25 m apart, just S of the road. N of the road,
60 more in a 125 m x 250m grid. All were baited with rolled oats, set about 1700. The tension
of the treadles was adjusted to be very sensitive.
The soil was loose and sandy, with some dry
grass. The higher vegetation was about 70% Artemisia sagesbrush ~30% Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus. Somewhat N of the area, about half of the bushes were
C. nauseosus, with bright yellow flowers. In general,
the bushes were 2-3 m apart. The sky was clear at night, temp. probably down to about
20° F. I checked the traps from about 0730
to 0900, picking them up. About half the
animals had died in the traps, and I gave
the bodies to the students to put up. I released
the live animals after showing some representative
species to the students. I caught 5 Dipodomys ordii,
6 D. panamintinus, 6 Perognathus parvus, 2 Microdipodops
megacephalus, 7 Peromyscus maniculatus. Jim Patton
had set 100 traps less than 1/2 mile away
and he caught a couple dozen Microdipodops.
I didn't look carefully at that area, but it
was somewhat higher, perhaps a little less of
a slope than the place I set mine. It's interesting
what a difference a small distance can make.
