Koford, R. 1977 Journal White Cloud campground, 4300 ft., 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd.), Nevada Co., Calif. 31 Aug. from the leg - presumably mange. I heard one Sg. give a scurrying call in between cluck notes without running during it. Sky clear, wind light. Temp. 66° at 0630, 82° at 1500, 69° at 2000. 1 Sept. I spent 0605-1220, 1812-1945 in the 1st study area, plus a couple times in the afternoon to check the traps. I also went into Nevada City for dry ice and supplies. 11 traps were set by 0745, closed then -1815. I caught a marked chickaree, an adult Beechey Ground Sg., removed chipmunks 10 times. I saw 2 examples of squirrels not being dominant on their own territories. Sky clear, wind to-10mph. Temp. 61° at 0600, about 80° in the afternoon, 67° at 2000. 2 Sept. I spent 0602-1215, 1743-1840 in the 1st study area I set 9 traps by 0815, closed them ~1250. I caught an unmarked Sg., but she died as I was working her - probably from an overdose of the anesthetic. She had been caught in a trap baited with a Sugar Pine cone from which the scale tips had been removed, exposing the seeds. She ate many of the seeds while in the trap, as her stomach was large, weighed 20 gr. I put her up (E74) in the afternoon. I removed chipmunks from the traps 7 times. I saw Gray Squirrel 6 times - one close, another in the campground. One other one fed on an Incense Cedar. I also saw a chipmunk feeding on an Incense Cedar. Sky clear, wind light. Temp. 61° at 0600, 83° at 1400, 68° at 1845.
