Moford, N. 1977 Journal White Cloud campground, 4300 ft., 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd.), Nevada Co., Calif. 5 Aug. I removed juvenile Beechey Ground Squirrels from traps 11 times, chipmunks 4 times. I saw a chase involving chickaree; also 2 of 4 Gray Squirrel seen were part of a chase. I saw DF go into her nest in the evening, out in the early afternoon. I also saw her young chir at a jun. I found a squirrel dead on the road on Hwy 20 at the turnoff to the Worlington Youth Conservation Corps, at 4000 ft. The skull was crushed, the skin torn badly, but I saved the teeth and eyes--though I'm not sure they still had the lenses. It was a lactating f - one uterine horn had 2 scars, 2 cl -- I couldn't find the other. I saw another lactating f near the road-kill. There was a heavy haze in the east in the morning, completely overcast by midday. Wind light. Temp: 66 at 0655, 79 at 1245, low 70's at 2000. 6 Aug. I spent 0658 - 1345 in the 1st study area. I set the 20 traps by 0740, closed them -- 1330. I caught one of DF's juveniles, removed juvenile ground squirrels 8 times, chipmunks 7 times. I saw a back-and-forth chase, a Gray Squirrel chased a chickaree, I saw DF move her jnu.s. around midday. Wind light. Clouds --90%. In the early morning, then completely overcast. Temp. 64 F at 0655, 78 at 1400. Judging by the past few days, it seems that the jun. B and the jun. with the cartop near T2 are gone.
