Roford, R. 1977 Journal White cloud campground, 4300 ft, 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd), Nevada Co, Calif. 18 July I spent 0515-1315, 1830-2050 in the 1st study area, opening 15 traps by 0625, closing them from 1025-1110. I caught 1 unmarked squirrel, 1 chipmunk, and a Beecroft Ground Squirrel. The light first hit the treetops at 0612. I saw a Gray Sg eat a Ponderosa Pine cone. It was -1/4 eaten, down to the central cone in place. Quite a few Ponderosa Pine cones have been eaten. I saw 2 Sugar Pine cones that had been cut near D1. Sky clear, windy most of the day, -15mph at the max. Temp, 66°F at 0515, 88° at 1500, 72° at 2100. The me-nest apparently has 3 jays, while sg & seem to have 2. 19 July I spent 0515-1245, 1820-1820 in the 1st study area, catching one chickaree, 2 chipmunks, 5 Beecroft Ground squirrels (8 jaws) The 15 traps were set by 0725, closed -1815. Sg E went to her nest in the early afternoon. The sky was clear in the morning, then high clouds covered <1% of the sky at midday, increasing to ~30% in the afternoon - still high and fleecy. Wind to -15mph, especially in the afternoon. Temp. 66°F at 0515, 82° at 1415, 73° at 2000. 20 July I spent 0205-1235, 1250-1353, 16045-2038 in the 1st study area. The 15 traps were set by 0735, closed -1225. Sg E went into her nest in the early afternoon. Near sunset, attracted by an alarm call and several squawking jays, I found a coyote. There were some isolated, small clouds in the late afternoon, otherwise clear. Wind light. Temp. 62°F at 0700, 84° at 1900, 74° at 2025.
