White Cloud campground, 4300 ft., 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd.), Nevada Co., Calif.
8 July I spent 0658-0930, 1000-1130 in the 1st study area, plus a few minutes at about 1215 to release a squirrel from the box. I set 20 traps by 0730, closed them ~1030. I also set 12 in the campground (the closed part) to try to get a juvenile. I got a ♀ in summer pelage with small nipples (though parous) that had a few white hairs at fl (not visible from a distance) on the body, and a torn right ear.
I released her in the study area. I caught a ♂ with small testes - perhaps the one that chirps at a high pitch. The sky was clear, wind to ~10 mph, temp. 63°F at 0655, 82° at 1230. I both
12 July I spent 0920-1301, 1500-2035 in the 1st study area.
I set 15 traps by 1000, closed them ~1820, catching a masked chipmunk, 4 Beechey Ground Squirrels (2 small juveniles). I found a new nest at noon, and saw a head (not DF) poking out of DF's nest hole. I also found several ponderosa pine cones - large cones, and a half-eaten Sugar Pine cone - the seed seen as big as a nutmeg cone. I also found a couple Douglas Fir cones. Sq. E seems to have lost 2 of her offspring (at least). I found .22 shells on the road ~15' from the nest tree. I saw a couple chipmunks and a Gray Squirrel. It was windy, up to ~15 mph, all day. Sky 20% to 40% cloudy until mid-afternoon, then last light clear. Temp. 76°F at 0915, 92° at 1500, 74° at 2030 at 2028.
