White Cloud campground, 8700 ft, 11 mile E Nevada City (by rd), Nevada Co, Calif.
5 July I spent 1840-2025 in the 1st study area, found 1 lost at night. The sky was clear, wind light. Temp. 78°F at 1600, 63° at 2030.
6 July I spent 0539-1330, 1420-1455, 1630-1655, and a few min. at about 1830 (to close the traps) in the 1st study area. I opened 33 traps by 0835, closed them ~1830, catching a chickaree, 2 tiny Beechey Ground Squirrels, and a moribund ♀ Beechey. She was found at ~1045 in the morning, cold but still breathing, with fly egg cases around the eyes, throat, and anus. Perhaps I'd missed closing this trap on 2 July. She died later and I put up the skin, after removing hundreds of egg cases. She had extensive mammary glands but I couldn't squeeze any milk from the nipples. I saw a Gray Squirrel in the study area, and several chipmunks.
The sun first hit the treetops at 0604. Wind light, sky clear. Temp. 58°F at 0535, 80° at 1700, 70° at 2000.
7 July I spent 0533-1310, 1427-1850, 1955-2025 in the 1st study area, opening 33 traps by 0740, closing them ~1830. I caught 1 chickaree, 2 tiny Beechey Ground Squirrel, and 2 chipmunks (same trap, same time). I saw 1 Gray Squirrel. I saw a vigorous chase of a juncos. Sky clear, wind to -10mph. Temp. 68°F at 0530, 85° at 1425, 70° at 2030.
