White Cloud campground, 4308 ft., 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd.), Nevada Co., Calif.
11 April a couple fir cones that were sprouting - apparently the squirrels still ate them. The sky was clear except for a hazy cloud cover (>95%) in the morning, wind to ~10mph.
Temp. 51°F at 0800, 68°F at 1500, 54°F at 1845.
12 April I spent 0800-1210, 1630-1830 in the 1st study area. I recorded some whines in the morning. I saw 2 females which were apparently lactating. In the evening, I found our O's nest, found the nest of a probable O. I had one observation of a low alarm note indicating a low degree of alarm. I saw an instance of cone 'stealing' - the sq. got caught. I saw a couple Gray Squirrels and Beechey Ground Squirrels, and some chipmunk. The wind was light. Sky clear except for ~10% cover at sunset. Temp 51°F at 0800, 72°F at 1400, 60°F at 1830.
13 April I spent 0527-1130, 1615 - 1845 in the 1st study area, seeing a couple of Gray Squirrels. I saw one encounter between a O and & that didn't seem friendly. The sky was overcast until ~0900, then ~50% clouds, wind to ~15mph, until the late afternoon, then clear. Temp 52°F at 0520, 62°F at 1615, 52°F at 1850.
14 April I spent 0540 - 0920 in the 1st study area. Sky clear, wind light. There seemed to be few chirps in the morning - perhaps because it's a little cool. Temp. 42°F at 0540, 60°F at 1000, when I left.
19 April I spent 1747 - 1850 in the 1st study area. Sky clear, wind light. Temp. 56°F at 1900. On the way up I saw 4 road-killed Gray Squirrel. In the study area, I saw 1 Gray sq. and a chipmunk. It hasn't rained or snowed in the last few days, and has been warm in the bay area.
