Koford, R. 1976 Journal White Cloud campground, 4300 ft, 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd), Nevada Co, Calif. 22 Dec. I arrived last night with my brother Erik. We stayed in the small trailer which CBK and I brought up last week, putting it in the upper loop of the campground. We spent 0750-1115, 1215-1645 in the 1st study area, setting 5 traps in the area of B5, C5 at 1230, closing them at 1530. We saw 1 chest, heard 2 others. Three juveniles were still together in a test oak. I saw squirrels E and G, and the one with the torn right ear, plus 2 marked juveniles. Chirring was infrequent. Some squirrels are in total winter pelage, some still have orange feet and a little orange on the skin. We saw 2 Grey Squirrels. The ground was wet, as if it might have rained recently. The last storm was on 17 Dec., and it dropped some rain and snow in the northern Sierras. I think that was the only storm since 23 Nov. The sky was hazy all day, a little lighter in the afternoon so some sun got through. Wind very light. Temp. reached the low 50's (7). 23 Dec. Erik and I spent 0713-1125, 1420-1447 in the 1st study area, then I took him into Grass Valley and put him on a bus. Then I spent 1607-1700 in the 1st study area. We set the 5 traps at 1115, closed them at 1425, when we caught one squirrel. Sky hazy in the morning, partly cloudy in the afternoon, clear by sunset. Wind light. Temp. 38'F at 0710, 48'F at 1300, 42'F at 1700.
