Journal
White Cloud campground, 4300 ft., 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd.), Nevada Co., Calif.
21 Nov. I spent 0648-1035, 1325-1645 in the 2nd study area hearing
few chirs, finding a new nest hole. I saw 6 Gray
Squirrels, hearing one chipmunk. Almost all the leaves
are off the oak, exposing the remaining involucres. The
ground was wet in places - a storm went through
a few days ago, with snow down to ~5000 ft. The
wind was light, sky 30-80% cloudy in the morning,
mostly clear in the afternoon. Temp. 46° at 0615, 60° at 1320, 51° at 1200.
22 Nov. I spent 0640-0915, 1130-1650 in the 2nd study
area, going into Nevada City to arrange to put
a trailer at White Cloud Station in the late morning.
I saw one squirrel which showed no reaction
to a Gray Squirrel a short distance away.
At another time I went to where I'd heard
a chirr on the ground, saw 2 Gray Squirrels.
I saw 2 others, heard a chipmunk call. I
found 4 Ponderosa pine cones from a previous
year on the ground. They had had the scale
tips removed and were not open. The couple
seeds I checked were no good. Sky clear,
wind up to ~20 mph in the morning, up to
~10 mph during the rest of the day. Temp. 47°F
at 0630, 66°F at 1120, 59°F at 1710.
23 Nov. I spent 0638-1155, 1240-1600 in the 2nd study area,
then left. Sky clear, wind light. Temp. 48°F at
0630, 64°F at 1230. I saw 2 Gray Squirrels,
heard a chipmunk.
