Koford, R. 1976 Journal Tamiasciurus douglasii White Cloud campground, 4300 ft., 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd.) Nevada Co. Cal if. 26 Sept. nest at midday, I saw one sort-of-chase, heard 2 chirs, saw 3 Gray Squirrels and a Cooper Hawk fly close to a squirrel. I set the 15 traps at 0855-0920, closed them 1750-1800. I continued the cone catalogue. Sky clear except for a few clouds in the west in the evening, contributing to a premature darkening of the sky. Wind up to ~10mph. Temp. 52°F at 0615, 68°F at 1400, 55°F at 1930. 27 Sept. I spent 0620-0930, 1130-1700 in the 2nd study area, going into Nevada City for supplies in the late morning. I set the 15 traps from 0855-0920, picked them up from 1510-1527, catching a new juvenile. I saw 3 Gray Squirrels in the study area, 2 on my way into Nevada City and one heard on the road. I saw one chase, one chase-at-a-distance, one squirrel outside its territory, and got some good territorial boundary chirs. The sky was hazy overcast in the early morning, then heavily overcast until early afternoon, then 90-100% cloudy for the afternoon. Wind up to ~20mph. Temp. 51°F at 0615, 67°F at 1330, 52°F at 1930. Some oak leaves are yellowing; some Sugar Pines have open cones- some still closed. Piny pines are losing their seeds, as are some Port Orford Pines. I collected 2 mushrooms. 28 Sept. I spent 0627-1400, 1435-1905 in the 1st study area, seeing 1 Gray Squirrel. I set 15 traps from 0855-0935, closed them from 1700-1715, catching 1 squirrel. I picked a couple Boletus mushrooms from the campground, saw 2 mushrooms in the study area. I heard 4 chirs, saw a new family with many juveniles. Sky overcast until ~0800, then ~70% until ~1500, then 100%. Wind up to ~15mph. Temp. 57°F at 0625, 65°F at 1430, 55°F at 1930.
