Koford, R. 1976 Journal Tamiasciurus douglasii White Cloud campground, 4300 ft., 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd.), Nevada Co., Calif. 16 July. 66 clips. I didn't set the traps. I watched an oak in the morning, saw what was probably a ? cone out- I had previously seen a ? use that oak for a nest. The western 2/3 of the campground has been closed due to lack of water, so there aren't any more campers to bother the squirrels there. A couple moles from the study area have been using part of the campground. The sky was overcast until 0845, then it cleared to ~20% cloud cover. Wind light except for occasional gusts to ~10mph. Temp. in the low 60's (F) at 0520, 76° at 1030, when I left. 21 July. I arrived last night. I spent 0910-1325, 1550-1845 in the 2nd study area, hearing 30 chirps, many from juveniles. I set 30 Tomahawks from 0925-1135, closed then ~1800. I've tried baiting a few of them with Douglas Fir cones in addition to peanuts. Sky clear, wind generally light. Temp. 60° F at 0730, 80° F at 1530, 62° F at 2020. 22 July. I spent 0550-1310, 1540-1810 in the 2nd study area, hearing 44 chirps, getting a long observation of a ? resting at midday. I opened the 30 traps from 0900-1030, closed then from 1745-1810. I saw a Cooperi Hawk fly into a tree where it evidently got a bird, then saw it plucking feathers a couple min later. Sky clear except for a few fleecy clouds in the late afternoon. Wind light. Temp. 61° F at 0545, 85° F at 1530, 63° F at 2020.
