Robson, R. 1926 Journal White Cloud campground, 4300 ft., 1 1/2 mi. E Nevada City (by mt.), Nevada Co., Calif. 9 July I saw a 3/4-grown juvenile, apparently in estrous. The sugar pine conkins are brownish-looking. Apparently I missed their yellow, ripening stage, but I can see no evidence that the squirrels ate any. I also missed the maturing of the ponderosa Pine conkins. 10 July I spent 0530-1325, 1535-1840 in the 1st study area, hearing 92 chirs. I opened the 45 traps from 0700 - 0830, closed them from 1805 - 1835, catching two Steller Jays and 2 Berkeley Ground Squirrels. I saw 2 closer in the morning - both in the campground, sky clear, wind to ~15 mph. Temp. 63°F at 0530, 94°F at 1530, 61°F at 2100. I went into Nevada city in the afternoon for dry ice and supplies. The campground was ~3/4 full - lots of noise, snake. 11 July I spent 0614-1320, 1545-2100 in the 1st study area, hearing 101 chirs. I opened the traps from 0750 - 0850, closed them ~1930, catching 2 Berkeley Ground Squirrels, 2 Steller Jays, and a Rufous-sided Towhee. The campground was almost full, and in the morning, but almost empty by evening. Sky was mostly clear most of the day - some clouds on the western horizon. Then a little before 1700 the clouds "moved" eastward and blocked the sun partially - there was a lazy sun which still cast shadows. The clouds were moving north. It cleared by sunset. Wind strong, up to ~20 mph. Temp. 63°F at 0600, 82°F at 1530, 61°F at 2130. I again saw the juvenile which appears to be in estrous, and got some good observations of a couple males approaching her.
