White Cloud campground, 4300 ft, 11 mi E Nevada City (by rd.) Nevada Co. Calif.
30 June I spent 0540-1145 in the 2nd study area, hearing only
8 chirs. The cold morning may have suppressed the calling.
I opened the 30 traps from 0730-0820, picked them
up from 1100-1140, caught 1 Juncos. I saw one Gray
Squirrel. Sky clear, wind light except for occasional
gusts up to ~15 mph. Temp ~50°F at 0600, 63°F
when I left ~7:1240.
7 July I spent 1330-2025 in the first study area, hearing 54 chirs.
I put out 45 Tomahawks, with sticks camouflaging them,
but did not set them. There were only a few campers
in the campground. The wind was light, sky overcast
with lazy clouds in the early afternoon, then
clearing almost completely. Temp reached ~80°F.
8 July I spent 0633-1400, 1625-
in the 1st study area,
hearing 46 chirs. I opened the 45 traps from 0730-
0845, closed them from 1815-1845, catching one juvenile
and 3 Beechey Ground Squirrels. I saw 4 Gray Squirrels-
I may have seen the same one more than once, two
Beechey Ground Squirrels, and a chipmunk. I found a
new nest and counted 4 juveniles - one of them was
marked. I watched the nest around midday but saw no
mother come, and again in the evening, again seeing no
68°F at 2130.
