White Cloud campground, 4300 ft., 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd.), Nevada Co., Calif.
27 May I spent 0545-1200, 1255-2020 in the 1st study area,
hearing 238 chirr plus a few I didn't record. Apparently
a war is extra, and there was lots of chosing and calling.
I opened the 35 traps for 0730-0900, closed them
a little after 1700. I forgot to close 3 traps
yesterday afternoon, and caught one Neotoma fuscipes
which I released. There were a few clouds in the west
in the afternoon. Wind up to ~20mph. Temp ~60°F to ~70°F.
28 May I spent 0553 to 1230 in the 1st study area, hearing 56
chirring calls. I opened the traps early, picked
them up around noon, catching 1 chickaree (FG).
I've seen some mushrooms which look like Amanita
and have been nibbled - one had the cap completely
eaten off - but I don't know if chickarees
have done it. There's pollen in the air - it's all
over my truck - probably from the Ponderosa Pine.
I left the study area at 1300. Sky clear,
wind light, temp ~60°F to the high 60's when I left.
2 June I arrived last night, parking the truck near
the 2nd study area. I spent 0605-1250, 1540-
1920 in the 2nd study area, setting 38 traps
in the late morning, closing them ~1800.
I also spent 1425-1515 in the 1st
study area, trying to see DG's juveniles, but I
saw nothing on the tree. In the second study
area, I saw scales from one small Sugar Pine
that had been eaten on the ground, and scattered
