Koford, R 1976 Journal White Klotz campground, 4300ft, 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd.) Nevada Co., Calif. 21 May are just breaking their last buds. I found 4 mushrooms which I think are Amanita. Also several morels which I've seen before are dry and hard - don't appear to have been eaten. The strobili on the Ponderosa Pines seem to be large enough to be eaten, but I haven't seen any being taken yet. Many Strobili cones are developing on the pines, as well as the Douglas Firs. The sky was overcast in the morning, clear in the early afternoon, then ~30% cloudy in the late afternoon. Wind 0-10 apl. Temp. ~60°F to ~70°F. Saw a pair at Western Tangier 22 May I spent 0628-1355, 1540-2020 in the 1st study area, hearing 46 chirring calls. I set 30 traps, mostly in the W end of the study area, from 1000-1330 and closed them from 1810-1840, catching only 2 Beechey Ground Squirrels. I saw one of eating strobili in a White Fir, even though I think the pollen has already been released. I also saw squirrels eating the young tips of Ponderosa Pine branches. I saw one Amanita which had been chewed around the edges. The buds of the White Firs are starting to get long. Sky clear mostly - some haze. Wind up to ~10 apl. Temp. ~60°F to ~70°. 23 May I spent 0610-1315, 1525-2010 in the 1st study area, hearing 28 chirring calls. I opened the 30 traps from 0615-0710, closed them at about 183°, but only caught 2 Beechey Ground Squirrels. The campground, almost full yesterday, was mostly cleared by this afternoon. A couple people with dogs came through
