White Cloud campground, 4300 ft, 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd), Nevada Co., Calif.
13 May I spent 0620-0700, 0840-1220, 1535-1730, 1840-
2000 in the 1st study area, hearing 17 chirs. I
set 10 traps in the study area at ~0645. I caught
2 Chickarees and a couple Ground Squirrels. I also
put out 25 traps north of the highway, catching
one female Chickaree. I closed those traps at
about 1800 and I picked up the 10 in the
study area at about 1715. Sky clear, wind 3-15
mph., Temp. mid 50's (°F) at 0700, low 70's in the
early afternoon, high 50's at 0800. New birds:

20 May I spent about an hour in the mid-afternoon in the area
of Norden and about half an hour in a campground
near Lake Valley Reservoir. Both areas had numerous
Lodgepole Pine cones and fallen cover which looked
light - maybe like last fall's crop. Also, both areas
had localized hot spots with many more cones
than adjacent areas - at least ~35% in dia.
Then I went to White Cloud campground and spent
1643-2020 in the 1st study area, hearing 11 chirs
and seeing a squirrel go into a hole in an oak.
The sky was hazy - wind light. Temp in the 60's (°F)
21 May I spent 0635-0745, 0845-1230, 1610-2005 in the 1st
study area, hearing 54 chirs. I saw a ? chir several
times and saw 2 Gray Squirrels - one on an oak in which
a ? had a nest - no close. Some of the Dogles firs
