White Cloud campground, 4300 ft, 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd), Nevada Co., Calif.
2 May I spent 0815 - 1315, 1439 - 1441, 1520 - 1740 in the first study area, hearing 9 chipmunks and catching 2 squirrels.
I opened the 15 traps in the study area at about 0830,
picked them up at about 1730. I opened the
30 traps outside the study area from about 0700
until about 0800. When I checked them in the
early afternoon, I found 2 DG and 2 AD plus
two other females. When I picked them up at
about 1800, 2 DG and 2 males were caught. I
kept one of them to take back to Berkeley, released
The ? died a couple days later (#67) and was frozen until 21 June 1976.
The other, The wind was light, sky a little hazy
most of the day. Temp. 49° F at 0700 , reaching
the mid-60's. I left the area at about 1900.
6 May I spent 0920 - 1230, 1540 - 1800 in the 2nd study
area. I heard no squirrels, saw only 2 Gray Squirrels,
at 0920 and 1235 near the SW end of the study
area. I set 15 traps in the study area at
about 1000 , checked them at about 1745. The
male which I brought back to Berkeley died
a day later. There was pollen blowing around
in the study area today - maybe from the oaks,
which are flowering, or White Fir - I'm not
sure whether the strobili are shedding pollen
or not. I found one White Fir with ~30 tips
under it with the strobili eaten off. The day
was windy - northerly, then easterly - up to 30 mph.
58°F at 1240, 54° F at 2000.
Sky overcast in A.M., partially cloudy in P.M. Temp. 48°F at 0920,
