Koford, P. 1976 Journal White Cloud campground, 4300 ft., 11 mi. E Nevada City (by road), Nye Co., Colo. 21 March CBK, Erik Koford, and I looked for squirrels and tried to collect some from 0630 - 0745 a few miles west of the study area. We set 15 live traps there, then spent 0800 - 0900 in the first study area. Then we went skiing and picked up the traps - no squirrels - at ~ 1600. There were only rare patches of snow in the study area, less than there'd been a couple weeks ago. Last Thanksgiving there had been ~ 1 ft. of snow here, but when I came up for a visit just after Christmas, there was hardly any snow on the ground - very large bare patches. This is in marked contrast to the previous year. I found remains of an eaten chickaree near I1 - the hair has been pulled out and was scattered over ~ 3 m. - very recent. 9 April I arrived at the campground at about 1730, parking in front of the closed gate in front of the picnic area. Then I spent 1745 - 1840 in the study area, seeing no squirrel but hearing 3 chirring calls from ~ 100 m. W of the study area - at 1755 1755, 1803, 1804. The ground is wet and snow covers about 1/3 of the ground, up to ~ 5 cm. deep. Since it's all in a thin layer and not crusty, I suppose it's left over from a snowstorm yesterday which dropped 4-6 inches at the higher elevations. I first saw snow at ~ 3700 ft. I saw some clicker tracks crossing the road near CS. Temp. ~ 40 F, wind light, sky clear.
