"Tips" refers to the distal 2-3 cm. of the cone which is not eaten by the squirrel. In some cases cones had been cut and had then broken resulting in a base and a tip. Since these tips could not be accurately separated from tips resulting from squirrel feeding, they were counted together. Actual number of cones consumed is thus the difference between "tips" and "bases". Cone counts on trees were by direct count.
1 Oct. I spent 0640 - 0654 in the first study area, then went E on Hwy 20 about a mile and collected a couple squirrels several hundred meters S of the Hwy, from 0710 - 1100. I heard churring calls at 0713, 0910 and at 0814. Going to where I'd heard the last one, sat for a while. Then it churred again, moved from a Sugar Pine to an oak, where I collected it - it was a Ø. At 1030, attracted by things falling from an oak, I saw a ♀, which I collected. Then I left.
11 Oct. I arrived around noon - sky overcast, cold. I marked a juvenile, then found 3 squirrels after sunset in traps. Thinking they wouldn't be able to find their ways back to their nests, I took them into the truck. One, female FH was caught 53N. 110° N4. A juv. was caught 11N. 200° H-1 and marked DG. Male CG
