White Cloud campground, 4300ft., 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd.), Nevada Co., Calif.
24 September Sky clear, wind light. Temp. 64°F at 0915, 78°F at 1330,
when I left.
29 September I arrived last night, then spent 0250-1315, 1630-1840 in
the second study area, opening the 45 traps in the
early morning, hearing 2 churring calls. While going to get
water in the picnic area in the early afternoon I saw a
very small juvenile on the ground- one eye was still shut.
I spent much of the time putting in grid stakes. By
late afternoon, the grid looked like this:
P1 P2 P3 P4 P5 P6
Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 R5 Q6 Q7 Q8
R1 R2 R3 R4 R5 R6 R7 R8 R9
S1 S2 S3 S4 S5 S6 S7 S8 S9
T3 T4 T5 T6 T7 T8 T9 T10 T11

Then I spent 1853-1920 in the 1st study area. Sky clear,
wind light. Temp. 61°F at 0800, 77°F at 1330, 66°F at 1915.
30 Sept. I spent 0635-0830 in the first study area, hearing 12 churring
calls, then the rest of the day, until 1920, mostly in
the second study area. I counted some eaten cones, then
picked up the traps late in the afternoon. Sky clear,
wind light. Temp. 63°F at 0815, in the high 70's (°F)
in the early afternoon, and 67°F at 1910. A table
of the cone findings follows:
