Koford, R. 1975 Journal White Cloud campground, 4300ft., 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd.), Nevada Co., Calif. 11 September I spent 0700-0815 in the first study area hearing 1 churring call, picking up the one trap I'd put there last evening. Then I set 11 traps in the area N of the buy across from the campground, in an attempt to trap a O? Then I spent 0950-1230, 1630-1830 in the second study area, hearing 4 churring calls. I opened the 45 traps there upon arriving, closed them when I left. I find the eating of 1 fir cone - it took much longer than a Ponderosa Pine Cone. Then I checked the 11 traps across from the campground. The sky was clean at sunrise, but cloud cover increased to ~80% by mid-morning; thu remained 50-80% until mid-afternoon, then cleared so that cloud cover at sunset was ~5%. Wind 5-15 mph. Temp. in mid-60's (F) at 0800, low 70's (F) in the afternoon, high 60's (F) at 1930. Approaching the 2nd study area, I saw 5 Blue Grosbeak. One of them - the mother? gave a low, repeated chook for about 2 min. after I came upon the group and they flew into several trees from the ground where they had been. I've also seen White-breasted Nuthatches in the second study area, which I hadn't noticed before in the first one. This may be a function of the time of year, though. Mixed species flocks are common now, consisting mostly of chickadees (Mountain and Chestnut-backed, Wilson's warblers, Nuthatches, and Creepers? in that order. Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, White-headed Woodpecker, Steller Jays, Band-tailed Pigeons, and Robins are also present.
