Ruford, R. 1975 Journal White Cloud campground, 4300 ft., 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd), Plumas Co., Calif. 26 August I found no fir or Sugar Pine cones. On the way back, I saw a Western Gray Squirrel near the top of a large White Fir with ~50 cones on it. The squirrel dropped the tip of a cone, apparently having just eaten the rest of it, then came down ~10x. and went into an Incense Cedar, perhaps trying to hide from me. There were 8 campsites occupied in the mid-afternoon, then a couple more in the evening. Wind 5-15 mph, sky clear except for a few clouds (~17%) around midday, several of which passed overhead. Temp. 60°F at 0500, 74°F at 1300, 64°F at 1945. In the morning I moved 8 of the traps to the N side of hwy 20, trying to catch a σ, leaving 4 in the campground. 27 August I spent 0720-1130 in the study area, hearing 3 churring calls. In the early morning I set 3 more traps N of the hwy, leaving 1 in the study area. I then picked up all the traps around noon. In order to get a rough idea of clickerette holes in comparison to other areas, I zigzagged through the study area for 30 min. I saw 107 holes that looked like fungus-digging sites, plus ~15 that I think contained cones: either they had scales in the vicinity or were at the base of a tree and looked long. I also found 2 green Ponderosa Pine cones and 1 pile of scales from a White Fir cone. Sky clear, wind 5-20 mph. it seemed cooler: temp. 55°F at 0800, 64°F at 1330, when I left. 5 September Having arrived last night, I spent 0700-0915 in the study area, hearing 11 churring calls. Then I spent the rest of the day on the hilltop N of the 30.00 mile marker, hearing no churring call. I set 45 traps, 3 W at ~25m intervals, 2 E at 25m intervals every ~50m along the road
