Koford, R. 1975 Journal White Cloud campground, 4300 ft., 11 mi. E Nevada City (by rd.), Nevada Co., Calif. 23 August I spent 0700 - 1215, 1530 - 2000 in the study area, hearing 8 churring calls and trapping 2 squirrels. The campground was full, but the only days I saw were on Tuesdays. Sky clear, wind 1 caught a juvenile Calif Ground Squirrel E of the grid. 5-15 mph; Temp 61°F at 1000, 73°F at 1530, 60°F at 2000. 24 August I spent 0615 - 0800 in the study area, hearing 9 churring calls. Then I took a trip in the truck to survey possible second study sites. I went E on Hwy 20, then E on Hwy 80 to Kingvale, ~5 mi. W of Donner Pass. There is a valley there, with the Yuba River running through it. The valley is all private land, under the control of developers. I picked up a road-killed squirrel 0.7 mi. NE of Kingvale on the small road that runs parallel to the freeway. I walked around the valley a little, and saw one chickaree - it seemed to have a stumpy tail. The terrain was rocky, the trees mostly Lodgepole Pine, with some fir and Jeffrey Pine. There didn't seem to be any place large enough, away from cabins, to use as a study site. I then went E and took a road S that went just W of Lake Van Norden. I walked in the area E of Ice Lakes, which was fairly level. It was mostly Lodgepole Pine out rocky terrain, and seemed fairly mesic - flower blooming yews (1010-1040) growing. In half an hour, I heard 1 alarm call, 1 churring call at 1035. I saw 1 Emonticola with ~20 cones on it, and there were a few small Red Firs. I then continued E, checking an area just N of Truckee which I knew to be flat. It was solid Jeffrey Pines, but seemed very dry. I went back W on Hwy 80, took the Yuba Gap turnoff, and checked an area near Lake Valley Res.
