Koford, R. 1975 Journal Skilman Campground, 3 1/2 mi. N, 12 mi. E Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. 24 July I spent the morning trying unsuccessfully to collect squirrels in the area W of the campground, while leaving the traps set. I heard churring calls at 0605, 0638, 0730, 0822, 0832, 0837, 0918, three at 0937. I saw one squirrel when it was too far away to get a good look at, then couldn't find it when I got closer. There were numerous holes where squirrels had dug up subterranean fungi. The area is much more moist than the area around White Cloud campground, with very small creeks flowing down the north-facing slope where I was. There were many bush-sized plants, mostly dogwood and hazelnut. The large trees were mostly Douglas and white Fir, with some Sugar Pines, Ponderosa Pines, and Black Oaks. I saw a single fox. Wind light, sky clear, temp. about 65°F at 0800, 75°F at noon. I left at 1300. White Cloud campground, 4300 ft., 11 mi.
