Koford, R. 1870 Journal 7mi E Nevada City (by rd), 4000 ft, Nevada City, Calif 28 June I tried to collect squirrels from 0630 until 1030, looking within about half a mile W of the Washington Ridge Youth Conservation Camp turnoff, within 1/4 mile of Hwy 20. I heard 3 churring calls and saw one mole, but collected no squirrels. I then left to go back to Berkeley, 4 July White Cloud campground, 4300ft, 11mi E Nevada City (by rd), Nevada Co, Calif. After getting dry ice in Nevada City, I parked across from the 29.30 mile marker and spent 1000 to 1230, 1430 to 2050 in the campground, setting out 14 live traps. I heard 8 churring calls, trapped one squirrel. I picked up an additional 184 tips from catkin-bearing branches from the Sugar Pine. I'd picked up 333 tips from under in late June. The cutkins still on the trees are orange and dry. The sky was about 50% cloud covered most of the day, as little as 10% in the morning, completely overcast for a while in the afternoon, then clear in the late afternoon. Temp. at 1400 was 72°F, at 2000 it was 56°F. Wind light. The campground was full with the accompanying shell motorcycles, occasional hikers in the study area, and a few firecrackers. 5 July I spent 0615 to 1245, 1415 to 2040 in the study area, hearing 20 churring calls and catching 3 squirrels. In the early afternoon I went into Nevada City for dry ice and supplies. I found one hole evidently dug by a chickaree with several Sugar Pine seedlings in it. Three had been pulled loose, 84 were still growing. Sky was clear, wind 0-5 mph. Temp. was 56°F at 0800, 73°F at 1430, 60°F at 2015.
