Nevada City, 2580 ft. +, Nevada Co., Calif.
8 June I left White Cloud campground and parked the truck in a pullout
about 300 m. N of Hwy 20 on the road leading to the Conservation
Camp at the 25.80 mile marker on Hwy 20, about 31/2
miles W along the road from the campground. I attempted to
collect female squirrels unsuccessfully from 0730 to
1130, 1430 to 1800. I saw two males and one
squirrel of unknown sex, and heard a churring call
from one of the males. I then went in to Nevada City
for groceries and stayed there to get dry ice Monday
morning. Wind 5-20 mph, sky clear. Temp. 59°F at 0730,
high 70's (°F) in midafternoon.
9 June I got dry ice, then came back to the campground. I set
the traps, which all had no bait left (Peromyscus ate the
peanuts?) and stayed in the study area 0730-1230,
1315 - 1930, closing the traps at ~1900. One trap
was missing from near stake B5 - evidently taken
by a camper. At least I know there was no squirrel in it.
Sky clear; wind 5-15 mph. Temp. 64°F at 0800, 79°F at
1300, 64°F at 2000. The campground only has a couple
vehicles left and is very quiet. I heard 3 churring
calls, none in the study area, and got some home
range information on an unmarked ? in the study area.
10 June I looked for squirrels in the study area from 0645 to 1200,
setting the traps in the morning, picking them up at noon. I heard
3 churring calls and saw 1 Racoon. The campground only
had a couple people in it. Sky clear, wind light. Temp.
65° at 0800, 80° at 1300 when I left.
