Koford, R. 1975 Journal Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. 2500 ft. t 26 May I went west 3 1/2 miles to the vicinity of the 25.80 mile marker and tried to collect squirrels. I walked around in the area north of the hwy from 0630 to 1230. At 0655 I heard a churring call, then an alarm call from about the same place a minute later. I investigated and saw two squirrels close together about 20m. high in a White Fir. One approached the other from behind and appeared to sniff only a few cm. from the anal area of the other. After about 2 sec. the squirrel being smelled turned around and the other squirrel ran off, leaving the tree via an adjacent oak. It wasn't chased at all. I watched to see which if either was a female, but couldn't tell, so I didn't collect either one. At 0800 I heard another churring call and found a ♀ about 30m. from the pair I'd seen earlier. At 1030 I heard another churring call. At 1125 I heard an alarm call from about 50m. away while I was watching a Pileated Woodpecker. I don't know if the alarm was in response to me or the woodpecker. While near the truck at 1420 I heard an alarm call from about 50 m. away and found a female which I collected. I then went into Nevada City for supplies and spent the night there so I could get some dry ice in the morning. The sky was overcast in the morning, clearing in the afternoon. Wind light. Temp. 54°F at 0630, 59°F at 1700, 53°F at 2100.
