Koford, R. 1975 Journal White Cloud campground, 4300 ft., 11 mi. E Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. 6 May From 0615 to 1200, 1500 to 1830, I tried to collect chickadees, mostly on the top of the hill about ¼ mile & along Hwy 20 from the campground, north of the road, but I also spent about an hour south of the road at about the 31 mile marker. I saw no squirrels, heard 1 churring call at 0725 and 2 alarm calls in the morning. The sky was clear all morning, about 5% cloud cover in the early afternoon increasing to about 50%. By late afternoon, then clearing again. Wind was light. Temp. 42°F at 0900, 53°F at 1500, 44°F at 2000. Birds seen: 1 Rufous-sided Towhee 2 Fox Sparrows 1 Nashville Warbler 2 Black-throated Gray Warblers 20+ Oregon Junco 10+ American Robin 4 White-headed Woodpecker 3 Hermit Warblers 5 Steller Jays 10+ Mountain Chickadees 1 Chestnut-backed Chickadee 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 7 May I spent 0800 to 0900, 0930 to 1400, 1530 to 1800 in the campground and study area. In the morning I set all the traps, moving 3 from the area around H-1 and G1 to around F2 and E3 and 3 others from the area E of A2 to near the campground entrance, trying to catch a pregnant ? for c&k. I heard 3 churring calls. Sky was clear all day—wind 0–5 mph. Temp. 43°F at 0800, 57°F at 1500, 54° at 1800. Western Tanager (3) were singing. I also saw: 2 Black-headed Grosbeaks 2 Golden-crowned Kinglets 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers 3 Hermit Warblers 1 Pileated Woodpecker 2 Audubon Warbler 1 Downy Woodpecker 4 Cassin finches 3 White-headed Woodpeckers 5 Mountain Chickadees 10+ Steller Jays 20+ American Robins 1 (Calif. Ground Squirrel) (jun.)
