White Cloud campground, 4300 ft., 11 mi E Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif.
4 May It had snowed about 2 in. last night, making good tracking conditions. These tracks were found in the morning:
[diagram]
Though I looked in the area around F2,3,4, G1,2,3, H1,2, I found no tracks there (I did find many Gray Squirrel tracks everywhere). The arc at which the easternmost tracks were found was 19 m. 260° from power pole 8. The tracks seemed to originate from that tree. A short distance south another set of tracks started—perhaps the same squirrel, but maybe not, since there seemed to be 2 widely separate end points. One of these squirrels had investigated both closed loops near H-1 and Ho, but I think this was an early excursion. A male's tracks originated 13 m. W D1 and came close to the first squirrel's tracks. I can't be sure which squirrel went where, but I think the male entered the campground near post 7, near the easternmost bathrooms. What may have been squirrel scat (though perhaps it was the male) started 40 m. 240° S2 and spent a while around a burnt stump. Another set These ended 10 m. E D1. Another set came from the area of camp 42 and came close to other tracks near stake A1, 11 m. 40° from A1. There could have been as many as 5 squirrels, or as few as 3.
