Koford, R. 1975 Journal White Cloud campground, 4300 ft., 11 mi. E Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. 2 May I spent 0800-0945, 1015-1200, 1500-1730, 1800-1930 in the campground and the study area, mostly in the latter. I heard 1 churring call and caught a juvenile Calif. Ground Squirrel about 25 ft. E of stake M2, next to a large rotting log which the squirrel went into a hole under when it was released. The sky was clear in the early morning, then a light haze at midday, clear in mid-afternoon, overcast late in the P.M. Temp. at 0800 - 47°F, at 1400 - 60°F, at 1900 - 52°F. The wind was about 10 mph, occasionally up to ~20 mph. Much of the snow has melted since I got here a few days ago. Snow cover in the more open places in the study area is about 50%, but still about 50% or more in places of dense tree cover. Birds seen: 4 Black-headed Grosbeaks 8+ Cassin Finchers 3 Solitary Vireos 1 Downy Woodpecker 1 White-headed Woodpecker 20+ Oregon Juncos 6 Audubon Warblers 3 Golden-crowned Kinglets 3 Mountain Chickadees 2 Chestnut-backed Chickadees 10+ American Robins 10+ Steller Jays 3 Hermit Warblers 3 May I spent 0800 - 1100 and 1600-1700 in the campground and study area. It was overcast all day and started raining lightly about 0915. The rain got harder around 1000 and continued into the afternoon, though with breaks in the late afternoon. It hailed a little around 1830. I caught 1 squirrel, then closed the traps. Wind 10-20mph, Temp. 40° at 0800, 38° at 1500.
