White Cloud campground, 11 mi. E Nevada City, Nevada Co., ca. 4300 ft.
6 April Judging by the amount of snow on my hood (of the truck) it snowed about another 10 cm. last night, but it wasn't snowing in the morning. In fact it didn't snow all day until 1720. It snowed about 3 cm. by 2130, when it was snowing very lightly. The day was mostly overcast but the sun did shine through occasionally in the early afternoon.
Temp. at 1500 was 34°F and this, in combination with the sun, loosened a lot of the snow that was piled on the tree branches, resulting in a lot of big globs of snow hitting the ground. This obliterated the squirrel tracks in most places. At 1800 the temp. was 31°F and at 0830 it was 29°F. Wind was light. I looked for squirrels from 0830 to 1130 in the area north of Hwy 20 and in the campground, then went into Nevada City for supplies. I walked around again from 1500 until 1730 in the campground and the study area. The snow is quite deep - occasionally up to my waist - making walking difficult. I saw tracks in the study area around stake D2, but the most of the area was not good for tracking. I found two Ponderosa Pine cones on top of the snow - presumably ones that had opened last year and only now fallen off. One had 2 good seeds. Both had many seed "holes" indicating that they had opened already. I saw some small tracks of an unknown mammal.
