White Cloud campground, 11 mi. E Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. 4300+ ft.
4 April drag marks between them.
Also there was an indentation at the rear of the track such as swollen testis might have made, though it may have been the base of the tail. The tracks went for about 25 m. on the ground, from tree to tree, ending within 1 m. of the base of an oak which had a hole about 2 ft. high with gnawed marks around it (See 27 March Tamiasciurus douglasii account).
I had earlier put a section of Ponderosa Pine needle vertically across the opening of the hole (at about 1800) and it was gone at 1922, when the tracks led me to the hole. I put another needle across the entrance and it was still there at 2130.
The other hole, higher up, had been almost completely covered with snow. It probably snowed at least 8 inches today, and the top of my camper had about 30 cm. of snow on it at sunset. The temp. was 29° F at 1300 and probably close to that all day. Wind was light, but at times up to about 20 mph. Most trees are laden with several inches of snow, but the tops of some are relatively free of it due to the wind. I saw no tracks of mammals other than squirrels, but did see these birds (No Sp. accounts).
