White Cloud campground, 11 mi. E Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. 4300 +/- ft.
April 3 one squirrel for about an hour as it stripped bark off, and got some good observations. I also saw some fresh bird tracks and old coyote tracks. The branches of all the trees were covered with a small amount of snow (< 1 cm.) and the storm seems to have dropped about 2 in. of fresh snow on the ground. The area was fairly quiet - few cars going by on the Hwy - and the only birds I heard were Golden-crowned Kinglets. Two forest service trucks left the guard station in the late afternoon. The temp. at 1700 and 1920 was 32° F; wind was 5-15 mph.
April 4 It snowed all day long, though there were breaks of a few minutes to half an hour. The consistency of the snow varied from light to quite wet. The sky was completely overcast all day. I went out to look for squirrels or sign from 0800 to 0930, 1230 to 1400, and 1700 to 1925. I found tracks in the campground in the morning, along with one hole which had been dug (dirt thrown out) but no cone scales which seemed new. There were some scales among the debris which had been thrown out of the hole. Though I made a cursory search of the study area in the morning I found no sign. The midday excursion was the least productive - I found no tracks. The late afternoon trip was worthwhile because, though I only saw a few sets of tracks, I could relate them temporally since
