Koford, R. 1975 Journal Upper Yosemite Valley, Mariposa Co., Calif. 3900 ft. March 30 I was on a camping trip with a few friends, among them Bonnie Bowen. We had arrived in the valley on March 28 and were stayed in Lower Pines campground. On March 29 we'd all gone up toward Nevada Falls, though we couldn't actually get to the falls. On the 30th, Bonnie and I spent the early afternoon walking around between the Indian Cave and Mirror Lake, at where we saw a mating bout involving Western Gray Squirrels. The sky was clear on the 29th and 30th, with light wind. The temperature ranged from about 30°F to about 55°F. There was no snow on the ground in many places on the valley floor, but patches a few meters across persisted in spots. The rim of the valley had 100% snow cover and the north-facing slopes around the Nevada Falls trail had up to 4 ft. of snow. The south-facing slopes were almost clear. The trails were icy in the morning but soft by the afternoon. In the afternoon, ice and snow fell off the north-facing cliffs accompanied by avalanche-like sounds of ice splitting and cracking off the walls. The quantity of ice that fell was small, but the chunks had considerable velocity by the time they got down to the trail. The flora of the valley floor was mostly Douglas Fir, Canyon Live Oak, and Ponderosa Pine, with some Incense Cedar, Black Oak, and meadow plants.
