White Cloud campground, 11 mi. E. Nevada City, Nevada Co., Calif. 4300 ft.
25 March and I looked for squirrels or squirrel sign for the rest of the day. I didn't see any squirrels, but did find some tracks and places where the squirrels had dug up cached cones. Though I searched the territories of squirrels EF, E, and CE fairly well, making transects about 10 m. apart, I found no diggings or freshly eaten cones. The only tracks I saw came from the campground. Tracking conditions are good, since any tracks seen were made after noon or so. I saw tracks of a few other mammals, too. I quit looking at (POST) 1915, around sunset. The only churring calls I heard were in the early afternoon. There is a lot of bark lying under the incense cedars - could have been peeled off by squirrels. I haven't seen any sap drops on the young cedars. The sky was mostly clear in the afternoon, and the wind picked up considerably, bending trees and making a lot of noise. Temp. at 1915 was 37°F. The night was clear and there was an almost-full moon.
26 March The snow had a firm crust on it where it had melted or been rained on yesterday, so I could cover a lot more ground per unit time than I could yesterday.
