C.K. Journal 22 March 1962 Punjabi Mr. Karnal, India Jagori (?) took bus to Jagodhi; then cycle ride show about 3 mi. N. to Jagadhri Forest (Mr. Jogdish said). Here scattered mixed broadleafs to 20' high, & 6' thick bushes in various clumps. Barley field alongside, & sugar cane a few 100 ft. away. I saw about 10 adults and 2 yrl. feeding on ground, apparently a sugar cane. But as soon as the trappers arrived they went dashing into the bush with their poles, & all monkeys were frightened into hiding. These trees part of a long serious belt, & doubtless many monkeys there, but seemed too thick for this type of catching. So I told men to try to catch, & to try again tomorrow. Johnny instructed to return tomorrow to inspect monkeys, record captures, and report to Mr. Dhawan. Jogdish & I returned to Karnal, thence to Delhi via bus. Another session - what we regarded was to find me good catchable group with high proportion 5-10 lbs.; J. had only evidence, promises, apt. inim, & repetition of what he said trappers had told him. Obviously trappers are an unreliable treacherous lot. 23 March 1962: at zoo farm, Delhi, saw that many of my caged monkeys from Tanakpur had severe diarrhea; one lying dead in cage; however, 5 specifically ordered out by vet. had been removed. These lay thousands in cages. I asked Dhawan, by telephone, to contact Deypta & have him drop off new location (Calcutta region). I spent evening with Ms. Rai and father at latter's home. They expect to be able to ship more.
