20 March 1962
New Delhi, India
brought back 3 ad. & I. He told me it was easy to go by
when Dhaman tried his to go,
bus, leaving this afternoon. But he showed considerable reluctance
and thought the trip would take 24 hours. I received cable
from Nagel saying 85 monkeys arrives, minus 11/9/67
6 or 7 dead, + 2 each dying; that diarrhea rampant, &
that apparent starvation thirst in cages. I about 50
monkeys from Tanchipur, sent after March 8, in cages; many sick
and diarrhea severe among them. I called veterinarian & had a
few of worst removed. The rest will be given 3 day sulfa treat-
ment & any with diarrhea rejected.
21 March 1962. While I was in Malaya, Mr. Jogdish had scouted
area near Karnal, about 110 mi. N. of Delhi, had arranged trappers
there, & reported it good, with plenty monkeys all sizes. He was sent
again afternoon of 20 March. By telephone this aft reported he had
not relocated the trappers. But one of them turned upon at zoo farm,
up
so with "Johnny" (a sort of office boy) I went on rickety bus to
Karnal, & met Jogdish, & we found where trappers were.
22 March 1962. Set out on 0610 hour for Bipli, where trappers
were camped. Thence via tonga (horse cart) to Lodwa. Then
walked about 3 miles across stub fields to tiny village of
Bani. At edge a small lola, and 100 yd. drain area of
20 palms, shater palms, & thick 5' grass & brush. They
set up two nets about 5' high, in all about 100' long, at
at edge
edge lake opposite of bare area. Then beat bushes on
opposite side with sticks. One female apparently only
animal present; they had said 10-12 there. Now they said
someone else had trapped them. So walked back to Lodwa,
