C. Koford 39 Journal 18 March 1962 Dacca E.Pakistan Syed Mujibullah, P.O. Box 137, Ramna, Dacca, monkey dealer. He came in old jeep. A rather rough-looking hotel-chewing man, formerly of Calcutta. No beard, turban, or hat. He installed me in hotel & we lunched on rice, chicken + mutton curry. He said animals his only business, & that he sells monkey lives in Pakistan. He has shipped to Dubai, to Pflizer, Lederle, & other labs. He said about 14 separate camps where monkeys caught, held, & shipped to Dacca. Sometimes sent by charter plane. Method of catch; sleeping place of monkey found. In morning monkey to water. Man water net put around a piece of jungle or artificial jungle. Men help guide monkeys into netted area. Net may be 2000 yards" long, & 2-3/4 yards high. Monkey driven into net, & over 100 often taken from one catch. Dr. Warner of IMR has witnessed this, seen baiting, & made monkey malaria studies in E. Pakistan. Dr. Mack "from K.L. had also been here. Monkeys from forests, not towns & villages, so take bait poorly. / Mr. Davis of Shamrock Farms Inc., R.D. 2, Middletown, N.Y., is is dealer who buys from M. "Dr. Hopwood" of Washington has also bought.. Shipping via PAA or PIA; in N.Y. within 24 hours of shipping. Fewer restrictions than India, so no "certificate of need" required, JM can stop anywhere in Pakistan, & set max numbers per crate allowed in India, & can send smaller monkeys. N.Y. price about $28 for 4-8 lbs. monkeys. / Births Feb. to May here. Chittagong one of trapping centers; Burma & Assam border too. / He said recently sold king cobra to N.Y. Zoo for about $1500.
