Kuala Lumpur, Malaya
Jalu area. Tall, larby, British; t said to be infatigable in field.
16 March 1962. Scheduled to leave by plane in morning for
Bangkok, Calcutta, Dacca, but flight cancelled. The airline
then sent us in afternoon to Singapore &t, to stay night and
leave next morning for Bangkok on Cathay Pacific.
17 March 1962. Flew over E. Malaya. East coast had
many long sand beaches, some muddy meandering rivers,
several offshore small islands. Sea calm & muddy until
1/2 mile out. Saw no coral reefs. Many great areas of forests,
mountains with no rock or bare ground visible. Cultivated
fields near a NE port. Then over Gulf of Siam; blue & calm. Near
coast of Thailand several wooded islands surrounded by clear
blue water. Mainland brown, flat, covered with sliced paddy rice.
Long straight narrow muddy canals. Green trees only around low mangroves.
Arrived Bangkok about 1030. Waited for Air France plane to Calcutta.
J O. Elliott told me that he had seen pig-tailed macaques in Lake Siem
lens on rare occasions. He usually detected Trupia by hearing them
first. J Saw 20 ± M. mice on grounds alongside of Majestic
Hotel, across from railroad station. At least we had small infants,
art, probably <1 month old. Several at Singapore also had small infants,
& at least one there apparently pregnant. J To Calcutta on
A F in evening. Stayed at airport rest house. E. Pakistan
18 March 1962. To Dacca on P.I.A. in morning. Flight over
diked paddy rice, meandering muddy rivers. Fairly green ground (the
dry season now). But all cultivated & flat. J Much time in
entry, due currency control; forms, & simply leaving my
passport to wear last, apparently intentionally. J telephoned
