C. Koford Journal 10 March 1962 Sunday Nr. Kuala Lumpur, Malaya Dead animals on road (McClure says rarely seen) at Canal Zone. Visited Univ. of Malaya, which has several modern new buildings & is building much more. Saw zoo dept. with Dr. Berry (large snail spurt), acting head of dept. (Hendrickson absent). Howard, student of the sheews, away for a few days. Having Hari Raya (Muslim holiday) now. 11 March 1962. With McClure, Milton, & about 45 others, drove 70± mi. N. of K.L to near Slim River, through a (Limia Blas) huge oil palm estate, to canal; then 2 mi. down canal to patch of forest. Were walked in forest & saw elephant trader (old) and fresh trader rhinos (probably 3-4 animals) and two rhino wallows, as app. used today. Heard many jungle birds. Visibility poor among trees because of many small Betam palms, which branch from base & fill up area between trees. Some 2-3' diam. Trunks topped for shade. Had short glimpses are monkeys in tree. Many mangos on fruit floor at some site. Milton and others trying to get area of 19 sq. miles protected for rhinos. Returned to K.L in evening. Rain about 5:30 p.m. 12 March 1962. Monday. Holiday (birthday of Sultan of Kelang). Visited Olivia Milton, who stays in govt chalet, and who has had much field experience in Burma & Africa before coming here to work in rhino. Now involved in projects orang utan survey in Indonesia & Borneo (Sarawak), and he showed me long letter from Harold Coolidge and Barbara (Mrs. Tom) Harrison, Mr. H. has project of raising baby orange & releasing in Bako National Park.
