than 50 in Malaya ( he had been in Burma & Africa for long periods). Had dinner with McClure, Bolens, & Milton.
10 March 1962 , Saturday. In early morning went with McClure to forest at about 2000 ft. about 22 miles from K.H. About 200 yds. from road was tall tree with aluminum ladder fastened to it; we climbed up ladder to platform 120 ft. above ground, where fine view of surrounding jungle & across the - to opposite forest slopes. About 700 acres here supposedly preserved from cutting. Stayed 0630 to 1130. Saw rhinoceros hornbill, minivets, barbets, leaf-birds, & many others. Heard argus pheasant. About 9 a.m. we saw a small group of pig - tailed macaque in tree about 200 yds. off. They were over 100' up in trees, feeding. One also broke off & stripped a twig. Two females carried small young, prob. under 1 month old. At least 2 1-2 yr. olds in groups. Probably probably at least 7 counting cubs.
After 1/2 hr. they moved to end branch & to adjoining tree. no calls. We had heard white-banded gibbon calling before ascending tree, but saw none. McClure thought there were 5 gps. in the area, about 5 per group, each gp. with one adult male. He also thought that both sexes called. We also heard a variety call at times; a wailing, rising & falling, but saw none. A week previously he saw two at close range from platform. | George Schaller had been here about Jan. 5,1960, when gibbons fairly com- mon & calling all day; now less, apparently. | Wyett-Smith is Malayan expert on trees, apparently, & helped choose this platform site. | Fewer epiphytes than Bario Colored (2). We saw only two lizards; a 3'monitor about 100' up in meters, & a possible Draco volans (saw only head). Returned to K.H. No
