Journal
29 July 1970. To Lima, Peru.
Finally truck pulled us out of sand. We drove as south to Lima.
Camped at airport in car.
30 July 1970. Ned Johnson arrived w/ Bob Brown and Carlos Martinez on early flight (0610) & cleared customs w/o difficulty. We stopped in Mielflor, then spent eve w/ Manuel Plenge (4 wife) and Maria Krepela at Plenge house (654 Pata, Mielflor). Drove thru countryside two hours road about Churay (lim. 8:0), then off 10 1/2 hrs. & camped east side of Loran Loday, as in 1967, '69. To nr Moyupe
1 August 1970. We drove north. Supper at Trujillo. Camped just S. of Merupe, near Lanalogque border, among sand hummocks. We set about 20 snap traps near shade.
2 August 1970. Trap held 1 Mus (dead), as in 1967. Drove on to Chicalya, where stopped. Then on north past Pima and TO Quebrada Pozuzas, nr. Talaro, opt. Piura fullano to Talara. Thence inland on "Piera Paima" road about 7 miles and camped within 1/2 mi. of scenic groves. Listened for owls & caprimulgids but heard none. Markingbird conspicuous; small red woodpecker common (Vanillae?), green woodpecker (Pi- ulus) present, & woodbrowsers, flycatchers, big finches, others.
3 August 1970. Saw lute among trees at dusk & dawn. W. collect ed and put up bird near camp. Primarily treegates from about 20' high bordering streamwork (dry). Generally dusty & dry. Herds of goats came through camp at times, and people on muletas came for water at well. 2 nets took 2 birds but no lute. Cile shot fox in death; we saw several mice; many rodents. I set 20 live traps near tree roots and around bushes on a slope; bankana craygramps here. Ned & I walked woods hunting for owls but found none.
