c Kofad 24 Journal 25 July 1970 Nr. Arequipa, Peru. Solitario and on - very dry. Lagunero Delino nearly dry - white salt bed; 14'00 ft. Descended then, looking for Phyllotis magister trapping site about 30 mi. before Arequipa, took ride road to ll. into Lomaya better when much drier, rode, rock walls, dry creek. Set 37 burritos there, within good view of El Misti. Cool evening. 26 July (1970) TO Coast Sunday. Well above freezing in morning. Traps did only a few and a Phyllotis darwini (catagized). But mouse trap taken seen in dust; the aluminum live traps again did poorly. We very - arrived gear, then went to Arequipa, slept off. Then on down to coast through rocky, sand, and vegetation (when any) to Camana, and on about 39 miles toward Chala. Camped after dark at edge ocean. Above Arequipa, now about 9000 ft., saw 2 (a +) condors near a few turkey vultures. Saw one caracara about 1'200', to E. of Arequipa. Altimeter registered 8800 ft. at Arequipa, + 400' at sea level! 27 July 1970. To dr. Nazca, Peru. Drove on north to Chala. Saw no condors along the way (in contrast to 1951 spring). Then on to Nazca, where visited w. Bill Franklin. He is due to leave Peru (and resume study) next March. We camped about 20 miles toward sea. 28 July 1970. Much rocky desert, but sand hills several hundred feet high to W. of sea. Much cotton grown here. Then on to Palpa (many rangers for sale) and turned off at km. 250 to Pisco and Lagunillas. There we looked around and found dead Mauremys (scared shell), dog, porpoise shells, 2 fish (a few months old) and several older shells of Dermochelys turtle. Usual Tropidurus(?) running among rocks and just on beach. Old sea lion car cassus w., hide fairly intact but skull broken. Saw 2 condors low over beach area. But stuck in sand; stayed overnight.
