23 July 1970.
H de Calacala, Obo. Peru,
The 25 live traps held 3 Aloa [illegible], all dead. Took up traps. The
6 live traps held 0 at 06 30, but 2 Cavia about 10 a.m. or 175
grms, I gave to Dave. Paradox, alive. 9, 290 grms, died shortly after put
compared
in live trap (why? - had only fracture of front leg). Calm sunny dry day.
reset 2 still traps for Cavia + took up rest. | We walked about
2 mi. NNE to rocky hill where we set 33 snap traps, 10 live traps,
4 still traps near boulder among open shrubs. Flushed 3 Notbo-
pratos or way, in vicinia partium. Vicinia seem to be in natural
variants - some obviously hybrids.
24 July 1970. Took up traps. Caught 6 P. oriclos, 1 Alb. yelshii, 1
P. pictus, 1 Chinchillidae jun. Bird shot a Notbopratos (480 grm. or t.5)
on my back. Fiesta de Calacala continued, increasing, with "music"
and dancing and beer. L.C. had been off to Chocoyani; returned w.
4 new live Oreotrochilus. Carl & I packed and departed (w. various gifts
from Dona P.) for Juliaca. Supplied them then drove on about 30 miles
[illegible] towards Arequipa and camped. No traps set.
25 July 1970. Cold night. We drove on, about 42 mi. from Juliaca,
large Lago Lala, Lagunillas, w. hundreds of cots + some wooded islets.
About 50 miles out, smaller lake, w. perhaps 20 nesting islets of
cots. Fine clear day. We drove on to summit, about 150 km. from
Juliaca, where I walked in vicinia in 1952. Found rare, although
isolated little changed. A few max shrub huts; perhaps more
slips than ligoa - rather dry & better dry stock. We looked for
Tucumanii and found numerous fresh tracks (about 1 mile N of the
pass, 13,300 by our altimeter). Also tracks of fox + skunk. Rather
room-like landscape w. rock formations, yanata, Cyperophyllon
and much soft bone ground. A few varroa seen. Then on to
