Journal 16 July 1970. Nr. Neños, Dpto. Puno, Peru. poor, w. frequent fakes & no signs. Camped on pampas about 10 mi. SE of Neños; I set 10 snap traps in 12,400 ft. dark, near foot rocky hill. 17 July 1970. Traps held 3 Phyllotus (colored ?). Thermometer indicated 9° F. min., in spite low altitude. We drove on toward Neños. About 5 miles shot of it we passed fine lake with extensive growth sweet reeds, many water plants, many coots, ducks, herons. Here, too, started a quena forest which extended over various hills; many lizards. We went on to Neños; the anthropologists were off en route to Cayez but expected back in evening. So we drove back 3 miles to the quena forest and camped near rocky hill. LC went off to look for Oreotrochilus roosting cave, she returned in eve with 2 Oreoemas which she observed (and heard) pulling shreds of red bark from the quena tree (see her notes). Erle & I set about 30 snap traps, 7 stud traps, 4 live traps, mostly near rocks, brush, & thick grass. We saw wis cochas in area. Comfortable living. [illegible] Head wounds; the Erle's Oreoema captured in afternoon. 18 July 1970. About 19° F. min., 13,400 ft. Traps held only 1 Colaptes & a few Phyllotus' sides. Shot a few birds & saw Oreoemas. It had looping flight, swallow- lite, and sometimes perched in top branches quena trees. I saw me several tenias in rather open woods. a few perfects in area; others seen in roadside grasslands. We found no hummingbirds. I flushed a brownish caprimulgus; wing less thorough too, rather
