15 July 1970
To Lake Aricai, Depto. Puno, Peru.
The road, my 11 swops held: 1p. pectin; 1 Nestump; 1 Abrothokelkii; Chinchillula,
1 Lemurups. Site of tent was beside icy shaded stream under boulders in
thick Festuca, Amicis, tola (photod). This was first time I had trapped N of the Aricona summit (I don't recall Chinchillula at 9 mi. 55W Lindon's site in 1951). Because of good results, I set about 40 live traps (+ 4 swops)
in the area 1 mile S. of camp, putting about 5 traps within 10' of where I took Lemurups. Carefully selected trap sites. Used folding aluminum Sherman
traps w. mixture grains as bait. Erik set about 20 swop traps in dry
rocky area near lake. I put 6 live traps along outcrop where I got a
Chinchillula
prem last night. About 8 pm, Erik showed me an area where
cactus had been eaten, apparently by Chinchillula judged by large
black droppings. At mouths some burraurus near rocks and
shrubs, many droppings; ground covered at mouth an burmur.
Tops some woolly cactus fruits cut off seeds exposed. Part of
fuzz from cactus dragged into holes. We put 5 live traps in that
area and 4 steel traps, in addition to the 10' swops already there (we held
a dead Chinchillula). Calm clear night.
16 July 1970. The traps in Chinchillula area held 3, one alive (also
in C/5K catch). My live traps 1 mile up rock took only 3 p. pectin (while
in swop trap), in spite of expectations. About 19'F. last night. 10th Often
saw a pair of Chloephaga geese on shore of Lake Aricona or
near it. Allogis in groups of 4 to 20. Duder near
L. Aricona - no water plants at surface, no roots; rather
a dead lake. We departed & drove to Andono, about
20 mi. from Aricona summit. Supped & gas. Then
on to Areillo. Took road to Piensa, when hoped to reach
w. Univ. Perus anthropologists. Road turned out to be
