Nr. Aricana Summit, Dato, Peru, Per.
Traps held 2 big (Alcedor?) w pointed noses (CBK set), 1 Nestonye (CBK set),
2 Phylletis ardea? (one FJK set), 1 Al. delii. Drive up canyon, stopping periodically to photo and observe habitat. Last permanent-looking habitations many mice in rocks along road about 1400f.
about 13400ft. Stopped near my 1951 Aricana campsite. All site now has large compound Indian hut (where roofless before). A caravan came bringing water over 1 mile down a saddle. No visitors or signs yet; on the whole, not greatly changed. Apparently more heavily grazed.
I hiked up canyon about 1/4 hour, looking for old Peronys tropiste. In area where I thought it was (flat, damp, large boulders) the ferns and other shrubs grazed to my eye.
Whole overall aspect at this season brown. Returned down canyon.
We drove up road to about 15200', where road makes a shake near a lake 1/4 mile across, & camped. N-aspect slope has bouldering feature, scattered brush, Pygospolythrum, rock chelon. I set 2 live & 35 snap traps hurriedly in bush. Clear night, cold. (1.2 mi. by road to summit).
14 July 1970. 19°F. min. last night. Traps held 3 Phylletis lavini, (1 set), 1 Alcedon jelschii (set), & 1 P. petita (escaped). Habitat looked good & further trapping away here produced Chinchillula & Peronys. But drove to summit to look for higher tropiste and set about 25 live & 11 snap traps there, in rocks near shrubs & thick grass. Camped 3 mi. by road 5 of summit, near shore of L. Aricana. Crib set traps in dry rocky area; I set 5 near foot rock outcrop by road. 1 mile NE of camp near cold clear stream coming down from glacier. I set 11 snap traps near shrubs, rocks, features & stream. Windy until dark; then calm clear.
15 July 1970. 19°F. min. temp. Clear morning, much ice by streams & P. dawwills,
drips. (using my 3 traps by camp held Chinchillula (escapes)). Exhale about 2/3 Phylletis denini + 1 to Alcedon jelschii near canyon. 1 mile up
= 13 mi. ENE Cruzero (7 traps)
