C. Koford 14 Journal 354 1970 12 mi. N. of Mazacruz, Depto. Puno, Peru. Insert, on p. 12. We drove down to Pampa Quillacoto to look for Otomys peruvianus, which Pearson had seen reported there. Picked up boy who knew the animal as "torotoco," described its color, tail, and call. He offered to show us where. We ended up with his mother too, in legs typical derby + Indian dress. The colony they showed us was a Guinea city, with guinea pigs bounding this way and that, in and out of holes - abundant, on slight rise on heavily overgrazed ground near houses. But we found no Otomys burrows. Brother of boy said the 2 animals in same colony, the lower down, but we did not return to check. Tuesday Returning from Quillacoto back to main road, we found a mud wall about 3 feet high. At this site dozens of Guinea bounded about as before, another guinea pig "city." cont. 4 July 1970. Hcda. Pichipichuni, Depto. Puno, Peru. along road to Juli and saw 100' burrows in area crossing road. Also dubbling saw Otomys heads out of burrows and heard babb calls. We took our 8 still traps and went in new area. I saw one Guinea go in hole within 6' of Otomys diggings at old site. At new site, a Guinea "town" at one edge of Otomyp area. I set 20 live traps, mostly in among grass clumps or in bank trails near station. sunny Calm cool clear evening. 3 Otomys from Lareseta still in snuggles. 5 July 1970. Hcda. Pichipichuni, Depto. Puno, Peru. No catch in traps. We took another Otomys in early morning. We de- parted and drove toward slave. About 10 miles down the road we [Kodachr. #] saw many Guinea in area short green trailing plant (not gram) and shot 3. And look large tusks. We also saw occasional Otomys, colonies. Eventually road climbed out of valley - very bad slow road - to about 13,800', then descended and improved.
